Using Tune-Up Grease on Your Garden Railroad

Loose rail joints cause problems, especially outdoors. Rail clamps work great to fix this problem, but they are expensive. Soldering also works, if you don't melt the ties and if you have lots of time.

I have found a product which cures almost all the problems associated with rail joints on LGB track.

That product is Permatex's "Dielectric Tune-Up Grease." It is available at auto parts stores. The packaging states it "Protects electrical connections, ignition parts and wiring from moisture, salt, dirt and corrosion."

I just squirt a quarter inch long dab in the rail joiner and make sure the joint is snug. Long stretches of track can be joined this way with minimal drop in voltage. Try it.
