Overhand Knot

Figure of Eight Knot
(Last revised August 22, 2023)

1. Make a bight at the working end of a rope, with the working end on the right as you are looking at the rope and the standing end on the left.

2. Take the working end and go OVER the standing end of the bight, forming a loop.

3. Looking at the result in front of you, you have a loop, with the working end OVER the standing end.

4. Take the standing end UNDER the working end.

5. Take the standing end (now on your left) and go OVER a portion of the loop and down through the loop. The working end is now going up and UNDER the top of the loop.

6. Dress the knot so you see the figure of eight.

7. Tighten and you have an effective stopper knot that looks elegant and is slightly bigger than a double overhand stopper knot. It is also much easier to untie, which makes it a favorite of sailors everywhere.
