Eva Cassidy
I first heard Eva Cassidy on a CD called Torch Songs. She sang "Autumn Leaves." I have never heard anything like it. It is sad, and romantic, and beautiful. Her voice is like no other. I had to find out more about this singer. Amazon.com carries all of her albums. They are all great. I especially like Live At Blues Alley. "Autumn Leaves" is on that CD. On Imagine she sings the title song in a most bewitching manner. I also love "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" from that CD. On Songbird she does an outstanding job, especially with "Fields of Gold." The CD also contains "Autumn Leaves." I don't think my words are adequate to describe her singing. It is pure. It is soulful. It is incredibly romantic. I also note that she sings "Songbird" on the soundtrack to Love Actually. Her popularity is spreading. She deserves it. Give any of her albums a try. I am sure you will become a fan.
Between the Lines, by Janis Ian (Columbia).
This album came out in 1975. There is just something about the voice of Janis Ian. I could listen to her all day. Also, the words of her songs are worth paying attention to. This is a "love lost" album. Still, even if you are happily engaged in a relationship, one can appreciate the clear voice of Janis Ian. Give her a try.
Light from a Distant Shore, by Hollie Smith. (Etherean Music)
I have listed this CD under Celtic Music also, because it has that flavor. However, Hollie Smith is from New Zealand! And she was only sixteen when she made this album! But this is one of my favorite albums. Her voice has a unique quality that is hard to put a finger on. There is no way you would fix her as a teenager from her voice. The "liner notes" on the CD include the words to the songs. And the songs are mostly written by Steve McDonald, (Sons of Somerled) who even joins her in a couple of them. Try this CD and I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
The Way We Were, by Barbara Streisand. (Columbia)
What can I say about Barbara Streisand that hasn't already been said? This album is one of my favorites by her. It is not the Soundtrack to the movie. But it is delivered with that perfection for which Streisand is known. The words are generally upbeat and Barbara is silky smooth in her delivery. This is an album about love successful. If you have never given Streisand a try, get this album.
