This album was cut in the fall of 1996. Doc Cheatham was 91 years old. Nicholas Payton was 23. Their trumpets sing. They make great music together. From the opening cut, How Deep is the Ocean on through Stardust and Save It Pretty Mama, this is an album that never disappoints. The trumpets shine and Doc's voice is just right.
Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington: The Great Summit: The Master Takes, by Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. (Roulette Jazz: A Blue Note Label).
According to the liner notes this album was made up of the master tapes from sessions on April 3 and 4, 1961. The tapes have been newly remixed and mastered in 24-bit. Clarity is superb. This album is charmed, as the sessions must have been. I never get enough of this album. Offerings include Duke's Place, I'm Just a Luck So and So, Mood Indigo, Drop Me Off in Harlem, Solitude, Don't Get Around Much Anymore and Azalea. This is one of my all-time favorite jazz albums. Give it a try.
Louis Armstrong's All Time Greatest Hits, by Louis Armstrong. (MCA Records).
This compilation album covers cuts from the 50's and 60's. It is a great album for someone just being introduced to Louis Armstrong. Some of his greatest hits are on this album All wonderfully performed. It includes A Kiss to Build a Dream On, That Lucky Old Sun, Gone Fishin' (with Bing Crosby), I Still Get Jealous and When It's Sleepy Time Down South.
